Our Girls Cannot Find Husbands, Reduce Tiv Bride Price - Eunice Ortom Begs Tor Tiv

Our Girls Cannot Find Husbands, Reduce Tiv Bride Price - Eunice Ortom Begs Tor Tiv

Wife of the Governor of Benue State, Mrs. Eunice Ortom, has appealed to Tor Tiv-elect, Prof. James Ayatse, to review bride-prices in Tiv land, to enable young men get married “when due”.

She made the appeal on Tuesday, when she paid a courtesy visit to the Tor Tiv-elect in Makurdi.

She decried the high demands made on young men seeking to marry Tiv daughters, and described the situation as “very discouraging”.

“Such high demands discourage many bachelors from even attempting to get married; the result is that many young girls cannot find husbands,” she said.

The governor’s wife argued that such exorbitant charges were not part of Tiv culture.

“Such charges are imported; our traditional rulers should discard them,” she said.

While noting that bride-price payment was sacrosanct in every marriage, she cautioned parents against selling their daughters “especially since the relationship between in-laws remains, long after such marriage rites”.

She regretted that many young men now preferred to elope with their loved ones owing to such huge monetary demands, and stressed the need to make the process affordable so as to restore the sanctity of the marriage institution.

Mrs Ortom pledged her support to the new monarch, saying that his emergence was an act of God that would bring unity to the Tiv nation.

Responding, the traditional ruler promised to work toward a united Tiv nation, and promised to be truthful, transparent and promote the fear of God at all times.

He also promised to uphold valuable cultural practices and repeal negative ones.

Ayatse decried the politics of rancour and acrimony in Tiv land, and promised to reconcile Tiv sons and daughters toward building a united front.
Leave Peace Corps alone, Youths caution Nigerian Police

Leave Peace Corps alone, Youths caution Nigerian Police

By Yemi Itodo

A youth based forum under the umbrella of National Youths Democratic Congress (NYDC), has come hard on the Nigerian Police Force, for meddling with the lawful activities of the Peace Corps of Nigeria.

The Police authority in Kwara State, had on Friday, shut down the official camp of the Peace Corps, alleging that proper permission was not taken from the Command before embarking on the training.

Also, on Sunday, the officials of the Nigerian Police disrupted the Bwari camp, where the Peace Corps of Nigeria was training its staff officers in Abuja, discharging the cadets to go back home.

These recent developments prompted the reaction from the NYDC, which described the onslaught on the Peace Corps as "administrative recklessness" on the part of the Police.

In a statement signed by the group National Secretary, Comrade Wisdom Obekpa, the youths accused the Nigerian Police of playing "vindictive politics with the future of Nigerian youths".

"This is nothing but cheer wickedness! The Nigerian Police is playing vindictive politics with the future of Nigerian youths. Anyone working against the future of the youths is an enemy of the youths.

"To the best of our knowledge, the Peace Corps of Nigeria has been engaging the youths on volunteerism and nation-building activities for almost 2 decades. We are also aware that, there are series of court judgements standing in support of the orientation programmes of the Corps. Why the sudden onslaught?

"This recent show of administrative recklessness on the part of the Police must stop. Our members across the country who apply for Police enrollment always find it difficult to scale through. We know how it is done in Nigeria, but Peace Corps has helped to break that hegemony of middlemen and godfatherism. Now, they are reacting negatively", the statement reads in part.

While advising the security agencies to always respect the interests of Nigerian youths, the group also encouraged the Peace Corps of Nigeria and other youth based bodies in Nigeria, not to relent in helping to reshape the orientation of the youths.

Budget Defence: Provost of Veterinary College decries poor funding

By Yemi Itodo

As the nation clamours for diversification of the economy through agricultural and other means; the Provost of the Federal College of Veterinary and Medical Laboratory Technology, Dr. Joseph Okwori, has canvased for adequate funding of the institution, for greater results.

Speaking at the ongoing budget defence of Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Federal Government, National Assembly, Abuja, on Monday, the Provost explained the many challenges of the college, occasioned by inadequate funding.

Dr. Okwori observed that the college, established in 1956, has been the only College of Veterinary and Medical Laboratory Technology in Sahara Africa; but has not attained the desired goals, due to poor budgetary provisions.

While pleading the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, Prof.  Okwori said, "the provision of overheads to the college is rather inadequate, this has really affected us.

"The college is a unique institution, not only in Nigeria, but in West Africa, where human and animal diagnosis are handled. We are into zoonotic, we produce a lots of biological in addition to teaching of students. We produce most of the lab technicians you see in major hospitals in Nigeria.

"We beg for more funding, proper funding will help us alot. Right now, we are in dare need of personnel, but how do you employ people without paying salaries? The budget office has to give approval before we can do such thing".

The Provost, therefore, urged the Senate and the federal government to help look into the personnel and overhead cost as captured in the 2017, adding that the earlier remittance of the budgetary provisions would also go a long way to help revitalise the ailing institution.

How Hon. George Alli Is Transforming Otukpo LGA (See Latest Project)

The Sole Administrator of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State has again given his people a reason to smile as he took his transformation train to Akpashi LGEA Primary School, Otukpo where he constructed another block of classrooms to replace the previous one which was a death trap for the school children.

The block of classrooms was overlooked by previous administrations until it was done by the SOLAD.

Dubbed as 'Mr Transformer', Alli had in the past changed the look of Otukpo, the heart of Idoma nation when he reconstructed the abandoned popular Och'Idoma Road, Eupi Road as well as the renovation of Akpegede community.

Speaking during the inauguration of the project, hard-working Alli told the staff and management of the institution he was happy to bring back the lost glory of the school, which according him has churned out prominent Idoma natives.

While urging the pupils to handle the facilities with care, Alli said the Ortom-led administration would left no stone unturned in making sure that the education sector is given priority.

Excitement As Capt. Samuel Edeh Memorial Peace Cup Kicks Off In Otukpo, Benue State

Determined to promote peace and unity among youths in Idoma Nation, respected activist and lawyer, Barr Paul Edeh's led Raw Gold Group is set to organize Captain Samuel Edeh Memorial Peace Cup which is a tournament intended to honour his late father.

The football competition, which is aimed at discouraging social vices among Idoma youths, according to the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee would feature teams drawn from Otukpo LGA of Benue.

Addressing newsmen last week, the LOC chairman, John Enyi, otherwise known as Iron Bender said the competition, which would kick-start on February 6 through April 7 would be the first of its kind in the Idoma Nation.

In his words:“The opening ceremony is slated February 16 at St. Francis Primary School, Otukpo where 24 teams from Otukpo would be slugging it out for the star price.

“As you can see, we have given out footballs to 24 teams and nets to the schools whose football pitches we will be hosting the tournament. It would interest you to know that four semi finalists will be given brand-new jerseys and trophy to the winner at the final stage of the competition,” he said.

Also speaking to our correspondent, the brain behind the competition, Barr Paul Edeh said the reason for the name Captain Samuel Edeh Memorial Peace Cup was honour his late father whose passion for peaceful coexistence of the Idoma Nation was unrivaled. He said that the intended outcome of the competition was to use the game of football to preach unity amongst the Idoma people as well as discourage the youths from involving themselves in social vices. He said further that "the competition was also an avenue to immortalize his late dad, Captain Samuel Ankwa Edeh, who was a renowned peacemaker until his death last year."

Barr. Edeh recounted that this competition is the first phase of the competition which would draw participants from only Otukpo Local Government Area with four teams expected to qualify to be joined by other teams to be drawn from local governments from Zone C senatorial district of Benue State.
He bemoaned the dearth of some defunct football clubs in Idoma land.

His words: “There was a time clubs like Obeya Babes and Apa United were making Idoma nation proud in football but today, the story is the other way round. We intend to bring back our lost glory.

“We want to use this avenue to revive the demise of football in our land. The interesting part is that Idoma United FC will be birthed from this tournament to compete in the division 3 league,” he assured.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the captains of the participating teams described the competition as a welcome development. He thanked the the initiator of the project  Barr Edeh for the innovation.

Reps Deny Passage Of National Unity and Peace Corps Bill

Reps Deny Passage Of National Unity and Peace Corps Bill

By Yemi Itodo

The House of Representatives, on Friday, clarified the ambiguity, supposedly emanating from the passage of the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill by the National Assembly.

Addressing members of the Reps Press Corp at the National Assembly, the Spokesman of the green chamber, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas denied passage of any bill in the name of National Unity and Peace Corps.

The Spokesman who jointly addressed the press with other ranking Lawmakers, also said the National Assembly did not merge any organisation with the Nigerian Peace Corps, during the conference committee.

"One thing I want to clarify, in the House, we don't have any Bill known as National Unity and Peace Corps Bill, so, I want to say, we don't have anything as National Unity and Peace Corps or anything said to be harmonised.

"A bill passed in the House of Representatives or Senate alone can not be a law, so a conference committee (Senate and House) was put in place on the 8th of December, 2016; this Conference Committee identified about 12 clauses that differ and, they sat down to harmonise the clauses", Abdulrazak added.

Speaking further, the Spokesman said, "The National Assembly did not merge any organisation with the peace corps".

He, however, explained that, the conference committee of both chambers recommended that, interesting party should obtain the enrolment form and undergo the stipulated mandatory orientation programme.

"However, there is a clause that provided that, people of great interest, common interest, should be accommodated, we will like to quote that particular clause.

"'Groups, associations that have similar objectives and have shown or are interested, shall be absolved as members of the Nigerian Peace Corps, subject to the mandatory limited training structure and teaching programme as prescribed, from time to time, upon the commencement of this act'".

The Lawmakeralso explained the achievements of the House of Reps in legislative business, for the past year.

He said "the House of Representatives has been working, out of the 18 Bills signed by Mr President - presented to the president by the National Assembly, 17 came from the House of Representatives, while one is from the senate.

"There are also 10 bills awaiting assent of the President and eight of these bills are from the House, while two are from the Senate.

"The National Assembly is working and the President is working too".

On the 2017 budget, the Spokesman unveiled the plans of the Reps to have a holistic and clean Appropriation Bill.

He said, "by Monday, between 13th to 15th of February, we are going to have what we call the 'National Budget Hearing' - a public hearing on the budget; the aim is to make the budget an all inclusive for all Nigerians.

"So far, we have written to 59 stakeholders, to submit their memoranda and it includes, the NLC, TUC, Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Bar Association and several others.

"This is to keep to the promise that, for the first time, we are going to have a public hearing on the budget. People will be able to provide their opinions and at the end, we will have a clean budget".

When asked if President Muhammadu Buhari actually spoke to the Speaker, the Reps spokesman said, "I just confirmed to you that the President spoke with the Speaker for about five minutes".

Benue Farmers Urge FG To Dredge River Benue For Dry Season Farming

Benue Farmers Urge FG To Dredge River Benue For Dry Season Farming

Farmers participating in the 2017 dry season farming in Benue state, are appealing to the Federal Government to dredge the River Benue to enable them increase access to water and cultivate the 2000 hecters farm land.

The farmers made the appeal at the official flag off ceremony by governor Samuel Ortom at the Agasha Fadama III Coastal Land on the Banks of River Benue, which is fast drying up.

Hon. Abraham, while explaining the production capacity of the land said, without access to water resources, cultivation of the 2000 hecters will constitute a challenge to increase food production target nationwide.

“A substantial portion of the River Benue has dried up, leaving a shallow dept of flowing water in one of Nigerians’ major rivers.

“The effect of global warming and climate change, is become clear by the day, with the abundant sharp sand taking over large portion of the big River Benue.

“The implication on dry season farming, a long standing tradition in Benue state, is a threat to increase food production nationwide and curb food crisis across the country”.

Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom while promising to help in local irrigation project says, the dredging work is beyond the state government’s capacity.

20 pensioners Lost Their Lives In Benue Due To Non-Payment Of Pension Allowance

20 pensioners Lost Their Lives In Benue Due To Non-Payment Of Pension Allowance

Hundreds of pensioners under the auspices of Concerned Pensioners in Benue State, marched to the government house yesterday to protest the non-payment of their pension allowance running to 11 months.

The vice chairman of the group, Mrs Stella Sarah Peters who spoke to newsmen said that over 20 pensioners died in the state last year due to non-payment of their pension allowance.

She threatened that the women wing of the group would march half naked on the streets of the capital city to protest the neglect of government over their plights.

While breaking down figures of those who lost their lives, Mrs Peters said that five of the deceased pensioners died in Makurdi while over 15 others died across the state, their death, she attributed to non-payment of their 11 months pension allowance.

According to her, ‘in Makurdi alone, five pensioners lost their lives due to their inability to go for treatment because of lack of money, we have more than 15 of those who died in the other parts of the state’.

“We are tired of “continuous failed promises” by the state government on the payment of our pension arrears. For eleven months now, nothing has been given to us. Last year  we only heard the governor promised to release 400million naira for payment of pension and gratuity but up till now, nobody knows what happen to the money”.

Earlier, the pensioners had stormed the seat of government and offered prayer to God to intervene in their plights as the state government remains obdurate to their situation

The Acting Secretary to the Government stated that Governor Ortom had directed monthly releases for payment of pensions at the state and local government levels as well as new enrolment of retirees on the payroll and that his directives had been complied with.

The pensioners had earlier marched to the gate of Government House where they held a prayer session and requested God to intervene on their behalf and enable the state government to address their challenges.

Chairman of the Concerned Pensioners, Comrade Peter Kyado stated that they had embarked on a three-day sensitization procession to the Head of Service, the House of Assembly and Government House to remind the government about their plight.
The pensioners stated that their challenges included the non-payment of arrears dating back to 2014 as well as upgrading of their monthly pensions.

MUST READ: Popular Human Rights Activist, Dr. West Ujah Blasts Gordons For Hitting On 2Face

***Nigeria's Economic lookalike, Gordons:

Written by Adoyi Dr. West Ujah

I thought Gordons was stupid but my friends said he is a comedian, then I watched his clip about 2face yesterday and I realised we were wrong, he is actually a moron that was educated as illiterate with more performance backstage.

Since Prof. Jega & Orubebe show, I have learnt to manage my public conduct well but it is hard to do so in the radiance of the Nigeria economy and our self economy, no one is smiling.

I am on a flight to Moscow hoping to see Regina and the turbulence is much, my brain is charged to express myself over how I feel about 2face before it gets to finding an exit.

I was going to hit on the uniqueness of 2face but then it is no news, except for people that listen to his songs but don't learn, Gordons is one. Just like the numbers of likes you get on your social media posts, if everyone actually wasn't reading and just clicking the like buttons, are we expected to have more educated illiterates like Gordons is posited?

Gordons called 2face an illiterate and fear of the yesteryears when the dreams to have a college certificate wasn't easy resurfaced, I was embarrassingly dump. My father was too embarrassed as an academia, he would threaten to enrol me as a mechanic apprentice.
He would also gift siblings that had good results then mama would console me with something without the knowledge of papa.

I eventually got a secondary school certificate and the fear of becoming a mechanic or an illiterate was gone, I believe 2face has the same.

Nigeria's economy is bad oh God...., but.... no one is looking into the death of our own self economy, the vital determining factor in our own self economy is the MOUTH, the inflow and outflow of what ever the body is consisted, talking of the goods, services and the Boo Shits, bears through the mouth.

Gordons is the synonym to which I choose to address my view of the present state of our economy.

Gordons and his mouth-likes are as bad as our economy, our economy looks like Gordons and it's a cry upon the sight, it does not look good at all.

The economy looks worst than Gordons in Benue state, before the recession, my people weren't being paid anyway, so it doesn't make a difference. You would add beauty to Gordons if you visit places like Agatu.

The economic impact has since taken effect we just didn't realise from the entertainment point of view, I wouldn't want to complicate us going into that by pointing out success and failures in the music and standup comedy aspect. The same thing I told my cousin X2 when he showed me BlackFace reposting Gordons' clip about 2face.

I would be lying if I take such as a surprise over Jude and P'Square brothers. But then popularity no easy to manage, you can own the world but won't be for long, what you did with yours is what they will remember. So if you are the type that own the world and shut the door on others, the expected end is the same as that of Gordons.

The mystery of reality connected to our emotions is always triggered by people that are dear to us, your enemy can atleast, hate you for a reason, your friends don't have one. I have been very emotional lately, every word is written with tears, I also sleep and wake everyday with my conscience lying beside me. It is a continuous heartbreak and hard to prep against, how comes no one noticed that?

Dear fellow Nigerians, do not loose your own self economy crying over Nigeria's economy, we must wake up on the other side of our beds, let the thinking strive differently.

I held a revolutionised protest in me for years and was ready to join 2face but then I asked myself, which of the problems and solutions exchanged between IStandWithNigeria & IStandWithBuhari will be implemented?

My childhood friend Victor Ujah called me with a wonderful business idea that requires low capital, I paused for a second, I thought I was the only one thinking outside the box where Gordons and his career were locked.

Only few people believing in God these days, they invest most of their energy and time complaining. But, have you deeply communicated with God?

He, the mystical wonder, the father of the fatherless, the most merciful and provider shall restore you when you are all by yourself. Seek him deeply, you don't have to speak in tongues to dial him, when visits your situation, he will give you a new name.
May the good lord bless us all.

Mass Defection Hits Benue APC As Over 2,000 Members Join PDP

Mass Defection Hits Benue APC As Over 2,000 Members Join PDP

Things seem to be falling apart presently in the Benue State chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as over 2,000 members of the party have reportedly defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

According to a Leadership report, the party members numbering over 2,000 were led by Honourable Thomas Mlanga.

They are from Ucha in Ukum Local Government Area of the state and their welcome ceremony was performed by former governor Gabriel Suswam.

In a statement signed by the state PDP publicity secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, the opposition party commended the decampees for “taking the wise decision to cross over into the light having realized they were only tricked with empty promises by the APC.”

The statement read: “As rightly stated by the lead decampee, Thomas Mlanga, at the occasion, the immediate past PDP-led administration of Rt. Hon. Gabriel Torwua Suswam, brought unprecedented prosperity and development to the people of Sankera area through the execution of massive infrastructural projects, pointing to the Zaki-Biam-Afia-Gbeji Road which passes through Ucha, as one of such projects.

“We like to emphasise here that, after sixteen years of stable existence during which period the PDP steered the ship of the Nigerian state to entrench democracy, and having emerged as one of Africa’s foremost political parties, our great party remains the only viable alternative for the Nigerian people, irrespective of tribe, religion or social status.

“The doors of the PDP are still wide open to receive more and more of Benue people who, realising their mistakes and are returning home.”
